2000   BIOLOGY

Grades 9-11

Year Course    1.00 Credit

Lab Fee $ 14.00

Students in grade 9 must meet the following requirements:

1.      Be able to read at grade level or no lower that one year below and be enrolled

in Algebra I or have had taken Algebra I.

            2.   Be recommended by the 8th grade science teacher.

Biology is the study of all living things.  The course covers the chemical basis of life, cell biology, and microorganism, the biology of plants, invertebrates, vertebrates and man.  During the course of the year students will learn laboratory skills and techniques involving use of the microscope, basic chemical tests and dissection work.  A good working knowledge of basic general science is necessary for biology and good study habits are essential for success throughout the year.

2001   APPLIED BIOLOGY

Grades 10-12

Year Course    1.00 Credit

Lab Fee      $ 14.50     Workbook Fee  $14.50

Biology is the study of living things.  Applied biology takes the approach of how living things affect man and how man affects living things.  This course is designed for the non-college bound student to get hands-on experience of life processes and living organisms around him/her.

2002     ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

Grades 11-12                                                              Prerequisite: Biology & Chemistry

Year Course    1.00 Credit  (Weighted Course)

Lab Fee $ 16.00      Optional Workbook  $ 71.25

Anatomy is the study of structures of the human body.  Physiology is the study of the chemical and physical functions of the human body.  A good working knowledge of biology and chemistry is essential for understanding the complex biochemistry of human physiology.  This class is recommended for students wishing to enter a premedical program in college.  Students are expected to meet high academic standards.  A research seminar is required.

Chemistry is the study of the properties of the material substances that we encounter in the world around us.  The study of chemistry is essential for any student intending to enter college.

Topics include the properties of matter, chemical formulas and reactions, atomic structure, periodicity of properties of the elements, chemical bonding, kinetic theory, solutions, electrochemistry, and organic chemistry.  Topics are addressed both qualitatively and quantitatively, as appropriate.  An important part of the course is discovery and application of concepts in laboratory investigations.

2004    PHYSICS

Grades 11-12                                                              Prerequisite: Chemistry or a “B” in Biology

Year Course    1.00   (Weighted Course)                                         Completed or taking Algebra II

Lab Fee $ 14.00

Physics is the study of the principles that govern the natural and man-made events that occur in the world around us.  The study of physics is appropriate for anyone with an inquiring mind and essential for those planning to enter college.

Topics include force, motion, energy, heat, waves, light, electricity, and nuclear physics.  Students have the opportunity to investigate the phenomenon being studied by conducting quantitative and qualitative experiments in a laboratory setting.  In addition to acquiring an understanding of basic physical principles, students develop and apply the logical thinking process of the scientific method of inquiry.

2005    PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Grades 11-12

Year Course    1.00 Credit

Lab Fee   $ 10.00        Goggles  $ 5.00

Physical Science is an introduction to chemistry and physics for the non-college bound student.  Students will have on-hands experience with the properties of matter and the chemicals that make our world, plus physical motion, electricity and the forces that affect their lives.

2008   EARTH SCIENCE

Grades 9-10

Year Course    1.00 Credit

Lab Fee $ 7.00

Earth Science is the study of astronomy, meteorology, oceanography and geology.  The course emphasizes basic science skills including logical thinking and the scientific method.  Topics include: the earth in space, earth’s air and water, weathering and erosion, rocks and minerals, earthquakes and volcanoes, and renewable and nonrenewable resources.  Students are provided an opportunity to experience the earth sciences through study, investigation and observation.

The study of earth science is essential for understanding the increasing number and complexity of issues which human beings face in attempting to live in harmony with nature.  Students are confronted with current issues such as water and air quality, use of renewable and non-renewable resources and waste management.  Grade is based on tests, quizzes, study guides, and attendance.
