All students enrolling in a Home Economics course will be required to join the F.C.S. (Family Consumer Science) Club.  This will allow the teacher to improve the club activities educationally as well as incorporating leadership skills.  The dues will be $12.00 for each student regardless of the number of courses taken.

Students will advance their knowledge and skills of how to acquire and practice a healthy lifestyle using the dietary guidelines and My Pyramid to reduce the risks of chronic disease and unsafe habits.  They will gain competence to differentiate methods of weight loss and reliable resources regarding food and beverage selection.  Students will understand culture, family, community and economic implications of obesity, healthy weight, and lifestyle.

 

 

1612    ENSURING FOOD SAFETY

Students will gain knowledge and develop skills needed to become informed and safe consumers and handlers of food.  They will evaluate information related to advances in nutrition, safety, and technology.  Students will master the skills required to safely prepare and store food, reducing the risk of food borne illnesses.  Students will evaluate the impact of consumer choices on the economy, environment and the global community.

 

During the second semester you will learn to make fantastic pies & cakes from scratch rather than a mix, yeast breads the way Grandma used to, and the family's holiday meals with all the trimmings.   Wouldn’t it be nice to know how to really use it?  These topics will be addressed in this course along with foreign foods.  Come be creative and explore the principles of food technology when preparing these foods in a laboratory experience. Students can develop personal assets that make them caring, healthy and responsible people.  They can learn skills to resist unhealthy influences, observe the impact of technology on relationship, respond to conflict without hostile intent, establish boundaries, respect diversity, resolve conflicts peacefully, and show concern for individual, family, and community.  These qualities help with the building of healthy families, quality interactions with peers and adults, establishing and maintaining friendships, preparing for engagement and marriage and developing relationships that make a productive workplace.

Students will understand the importance of a career plan in relation to income and meeting financial needs.  They will gain critical knowledge and skills to help them function as informed, educated and responsible consumers.  They will determine needs based upon values, critique media’s representation of goods and service, compare and evaluate quality of products in order to make informed, responsible decisions.  They will develop attitudes and skills to achieve personal financial wellness by learning the implications of sound financial decision making, appropriate use of credit, adequate insurance and the impact of personal and workplace financial wellness.  They will learn the interrelationship between values, spending decisions, income and education.  They will be able to use and discern technology for financial purpose and avoiding financial fraud.

Students are beginning to assume increasing responsibility for their own growth and development.  They will analyze personal assets and plan strategies to increase these assets to help them develop into caring healthy, confident, and responsible people.  They will set school, family, and life goals, develop and implement plans to achieve these goals, and reflect on the process and results.  They will develop personal leadership skills by creating a self-identity; making ethical choices; learning to control impulses; showing confidence in their ability to interpret, respond to, and influence change; and taking reasoned risks.  They will develop strategies for life long learning, assess the impact of their own behavior in the world around them—friends, family, school, community, nation, world—and develop ways of improving conditions affecting others.

 

 

1606    SEWING

Grades 9-12

Students will construct a variety of projects including craft items and clothing items determined by past sewing experience and skill level.

 

Students will be responsible for supplying their own fabrics, patterns, supplies, equipment and notions.  Sewing machines and some materials will be provided by the district.
