All Students: Keep working hard on grades! Final exams could cause failure in classes if averages are not high enough to bring up low exams.

 

Important Dates:

May 12: Parkway High School Awards Night, 7:00 p.m. (Most Scholarships for seniors will be presented this evening, Dress Nicely!)

May 18: Vantage Senior Awards program at 9:00 a.m.

May 23: Parkway High School Graduation, 1:30 p.m.

May 27: Last day for students 9-11

June 10-25: Summer OGT intervention and testing – letters will be mailed to students who still need to pass a section of OGT

Job Corps Program:  US Dept. of Labor has a program for economically disadvanted 16-24 year olds. Job Corps offers training for careers in a number of high-growth industries and provides an opportunity to finish a high school diploma or get a GED – at no cost to income-eligible youth. The program is for students looking for an alternative to college and ready to begin career training after graduating. Cleveland Institute of Art  is hosting a residential Pre-college program July 5017 for students entering grades 10, 11, or 12. Programs include Animation, Digital Imaging, Exploring Identity, Foundation in Art & Design, Industrial Design & Interior Design. You can earn 2 college credits and have your portfolio reviewed. Women in Engineering Summer Camp: for female students who have completed 9th grade or are a sophomore, junior, senior or just graduated from high school. Cost for Sunday through Friday camp is $475 to University of Dayton School of Engineering. All expenses are included in the fee. University of Akron Summer Engineering Camp- June 13-18, for females entering grades 9, 10, 11, 12. Cost only $190. Apply as soon as possible, forms in guidance office or at www.wiep.uakron.edu

 

Junior Athletes: Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if you plan to participate in college athletics. Log on at www.eligibilitycenter.org, select the “Fall 2010 or after” icon, select “New Account” tab at top of screen to begin the registration process.

 

Juniors interested in Air Force, Army, Naval, & Merchant Marine Academies:

Request an application during spring of junior year or any time thereafter through U. S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s website (http://brown.senate.gov) or call 888-896-OHIO to request application packet. Submit packet between August 1 and Oct. 1, 2010. Then participate in an interview with the senator’s academy selection advisory committee and receive notification of nomination before January 31, 2011.

 

Juniors interested in visual, literary, & performing arts: For scholarship opportunities, go to www.youngarts.org to apply for a scholarship to all-expense-paid trip to Miami for YoungArts Week National finalists. Apply by Oct. 15, 2010.

 

A tool for college planning and financial aid for seniors, juniors and really any student is the FAFSA4caster.  FAFSA4caster will simplify the financial aid process and help you determine how to pay for college.  It provides an estimated Expected Family Contribution (EFC) allowing you to see what amount colleges expect you and your family to contribute. Access at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov

 

If you are still wavering about a career, check into OCIS (Ohio Career Information System) at http://ocis.ode.state.oh.us and use the User Name of ParkwHS and the password: ohiocis03.  This is a free website for you available 24/7 on the internet.  There is a career interest assessment that you took last year at OCIS and there is detailed information on every career.  Also, use OCIS for college and scholarship search activities as well. Parkway Local Schools provides this service for you. 

 

Construction Craft Laborer Apprenticeship Program: “Building Careers in Construction” Female & Minority participation is encouraged. Applications are accepted once a year around March or April. You must be 18 with a valid drivers license or state ID, be physically able to perform the work of the trade, have a high school diploma or GED, pass a drug test. §  May 28: Dayton’s CW Television & Wright State University Scholarship- Write a 200 word essay, apply at www.Daytonscw.com

§  Minster Machine Company offers opportunities for 2010 graduates who are pursuing an Engineering Degree in college, a two year technology related degree program, or students who are graduating with Vantage trade skills. Opportunities include co-op, intern, and apprenticeship programs. If you are interested, please sign up on the appropriate sheet on the guidance bulletin board or email Mr. Daniel Schoch at schochd@minster.com about your interest in the program and he will send additional information.

§  Nov. 1: Voice of Democracy Audio Essay- Contest for grades 9-12, brochures in guidance office or at www.vfw.org, under “Programs”/ “VFW Scholarship Programs.” $2.5 million in scholarships awarded annually.

 

Owens Community College is holding “Registration Rocks” days throughout May & June. Flyer on guidance bulletin board or go to www.owens.edu for available sessions at Toledo or Findlay.

University Visitor’s Network is a new information portal for college-bound students, enrolled students & parents which provides info regarding academics, cost for each school, photos, videos, and links on campus and local communities. Check it out at: www.universityvisitorsnetwork.com

 

Northwest Ohio Allied Health Consortium: $3,310 Scholarship available each year. The Consortium is made up of Rhodes State College, Marion Technical College, Northwest State Community College and Urbana University. Local Scholarship information: Interviews for the Parkway Community Scholarships will take place on Weds, May 5. Schedule is posted on guidance office bulletin board. Interviews for Roebuck scholarships will take place on Thursday, May 6, in the afternoon – letters have been mailed to students being interviewed.

 

Student Loans:

Mercer County Civic Foundation offers low interest $900 college loans. Interest (4%) does not accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if loan is repaid within that time. Applications are available from the Mercer County Civic Foundation office at 119 W. Fulton St, Celina, OH  45822. 

Mercer County Civic Foundation has a specific loan for Ohio Northern University Pharmacy majors. With proof of graduation, all ONU pharmacy loans become grants!

 

Medical Loans: The Medical Educational Foundation of the Academy of Medicine of Lima & Allen County, Ohio offers financial assistance to medical students. All monies are given as loans, not scholarships or grants. Upon completion of residency, if the physician practices in Allen County, the loan is repaid with no interest.
