All Parkway Students are required to pass four years of English to meet graduation requirements. At each grade level all basic forms of language arts will be studied: grammar, writing, oral communications and literature. Students will choose from these courses:

Students will be introduced to the history, literary elements, and examples of American Literature in the forms of poetry, short stories, novels, and drama in order to understand the making of their own literary heritage. Students will continue their studies using English Grammar and Sentence Complexity to advance their Written Composition.

Students will be introduced to the history, literary elements, and examples of British literature in the forms of poetry, short stories and drama in order to come to an understanding of the major literary eras in English literature. In addition to studying literature, the student will be introduced to advanced study in English grammar to further develop the understanding of writing complexly. The writing in the course will center on the expository type as the students will evaluate and interpret literary elements and the literature which they read in paragraph, five paragraph, and eleven paragraph essay forms. Culminating the writing efforts in class will be a research paper. In order to promote the complexity of the student’s writing, a study of ACT caliber words and etymologies will be examined throughout the year.

Junior Honors English students will need to purchase “The Grapes of Wrath” on their own to be read over the summer.

Language and Composition

Students will be introduced to the history, literary elements, and examples of American literature in the forms of poetry, short stories, and drama in order to come to an understanding of the makings of our own literary heritage. In addition, the honors students will examine and in their own writing emulate various literary techniques used in non-fiction writing. Further, an advanced study of English grammar will be inducted into the course to further develop the understanding of complex writing with five paragraph and eleven paragraph essays. Culminating the writing efforts of ACT caliber words and etymologies will be studied throughout the year to bolster the student’s diction. Finally, three non-fiction novels will be read throughout the year, which are representative of time periods in American literature.

Literature and Composition

Students will be introduced to the history, literary elements, and examples of British literature in the forms of poetry, short stories, and drama in order to come to an understanding of the makings of our own literary and language heritage. In addition, the honor students will be intensely studying literary techniques and terms through the means of a broad range of representative projects. The writings in the course will center on the expository, interpretive, and creative styles of writing. Culminating the reading and writing efforts in class will be several research-based papers. In order to promote complex writing, a study of ACT caliber words and etymologies will be studied throughout the year to bolster the student’s diction. Finally, at least four (4) class novels will be read throughout the year in addition to several self-selected classics and outside summer reading requirements.
